Clean Regattas is a third party certification program that helps regattas, yacht clubs and sailing programs voluntarily achieve higher environmental standards. Participants have the option of choosing a Bronze, Silver or Gold level of engagement, and work to fulfill each of the requirements necessary to be certified at that level. Sailors for the Sea provides support and materials, and the final certification that a club or event is a Clean Regatta.

BENEFITS OF CERTIFICATION

By committing to Clean Regattas, you join the ranks of regattas around the world, from the America's Cup to Nantucket Race Week, the US Sailing National Championships to the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, who have pledged to protect our oceans and local waters. Additionally, Clean Regattas benefit from the following advantages:

  • Environmental - A Clean Regatta generates less material waste, reduces the amount of debris in the water and on the shore, and the amount of nonpoint source pollution being washed into the sea. The waters on which we sail are also important ecosystems and habitat for marine mammals, fish and birds. Clean Regattas helps insure that the waters remain healthy and vital.
  • Regulation Anticipation - With our oceans in an apparent constant decline, states and nations are increasing aquatic regulations. As a voluntary program, Clean Regattas helps you stay ahead of the regulatory curve. When tributyl tin (TBT) bottom paints were banned in 1989, those already using tin-free paints were saved the trouble and cost of having to make the change.
  • Public Relations - Actions that support a healthy marine ecosystem should bring positive attention to a yacht club or regatta. Regattas could see new and diverse sponsors and yacht club enrollment could go up. Perhaps you are already fulfilling the Clean Regattas requirements. Sign up and receive the recognition that you deserve.
  • Economic - By reducing reliance on plastic bottles, fossil fuels, and disposable products, clubs and regatta organizers can save money in both the short and the long term. By anticipating regulations, you can save the money that might be spent on an abrupt and costly change when laws are later passed, or even an expensive cleanup effort. Finally, the positive public relations can bring more and new sponsors to a regatta and generate the interest of donors, potential members, foundations and community support for clubs with a non-profit status.
