Environmental Outreach

It is important to create a tradition of sustainability at regattas that will have a dynamic impact on the oceans for years to come.

Fostering a sense of responsibility amongst regatta participants will allow you to become a catalyst for engaging boaters to protect their waters. In this toolkit, we suggest many ways to engage participants to be good stewards of the environment, and in this best practice, we suggest recognizing those who go above and beyond for the greater good of ocean health.

Aside from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, we’ve got “Most Valuable Player” and “Most Sportsmanlike” – but isn’t it time we recognize and reward those we feel are “Most Environmental”? The idea behind this award came in 2014 when the BVI Spring Regatta in Tortola initiated the concept. It was a trial run and they asked their sailors in an online survey about their “green” tendencies.

To fulfill this Best Practice do at least one of the following:

  • Invite local environmental groups to host an information booth on ocean health.
  • Give out Green Awards to highlight best practices by a specific individual or boat.
  • Host a photography or art contest to coincide with the Clean Regatta.
