Toxic-free Cleaning

As regatta organizer, you can request all participants limit their impact on local water quality by using “water only washdowns” (“WOW!”) at the end of racing.

Reducing the amount of detergent, soap, or bleach in your water helps keep your waters free of unnecessary nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates. If soaps must be used, be sure to offer participants a non-toxic cleaning product that’s friendly to the environment and biodegradable.

Five simple alternatives to petroleum-based products:

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: pure vinegar, vinegar and salt, or a paste of baking soda and water
  • Aluminum Cleaner: one quart water + two tablespoons cream of tartar. Bring to a boil and let simmer for ten minutes
  • Window/Glass Cleaner: fill spray bottle with equal parts vinegar + water
  • Fiberglass Stain Remover: use a paste of baking soda
  • Mildew Remover: salt + lemon juice/white vinegar (creates a paste)

To fulfill this Best Practice do at least one of the following:

  • Eliminate the use of any harmful cleaning products at event site.
  • Suggest a “Water Only Washdown” protocol for boats at your event.
  • Require use of nontoxic cleaning products.
