Celebrating Sailors for the Sea Portugal

On May 27th in Cascais, Portugal, 150 friends, sponsors and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the launch of Sailors for the Sea Portugal’s new office. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place during the same week as Blue Week Lisbon, The World Ocean Summit and the Volvo Ocean Race Lisbon Stopover. The theme, “Portugal is sea” was heard throughout the week of events and demonstrates how deeply tied this unique country is to the ocean, making it a perfect home for our first European affiliate.

The evening began with the dedication of a children’s book created for Sailors for the Sea Portugal, “A Garaffa Magica” (A Magic Bottle), written by Sara Rodi and illustrated by Joao Rodrigues with the mission to educate and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. It tells the story of Abel, a boy who finds a magical bottle that sends him on an ocean adventure, during his travels he meets people and sea creatures who share with him the different health issues our ocean faces today. When he reaches the coordinates given to him in the bottle he meets a wise sailor who teaches him that he and everyone on this planet, has a vital role to play in saving the ocean. The author, illustrator and publisher were on hand to talk about their passion for the project and their excitement in sharing this story with the world through Sailors for the Sea Portugal. The book is currently available only in Portuguese; copies can be purchased online at by clicking here. Proceeds from the book will support Sailors for the Sea Portugal in their educational endeavors.

Marina de Cascais generously donates office space to Sailors for the Sea Portugal in the heart of the marina village of Cascais. This venue hosts premier sailing events regularly and will be embracing the Clean Regattas program. The ceremony featured speeches by Minister of Agriculture and Seas, Assunção Cristas, Secretary of State of the Sea Manuel Pinto De Abreu, Mayor of Cascais Carlos Carreiras, Sailors for the Sea Portugal President Bernardo Correa De Barros and Sailors for the Sea Chairman David Rockefeller Jr. Additionally, there to commemorate the occasion were Sailors for the Sea President R. Mark Davis and Sailors for the Sea Japan President Minako Iue. After the ribbon was cut guests flooded the office and Hard Rock Café Lisboa generously provided tasty bites and cool refreshments.

Sailors for the Sea Portugal is the second affiliate to be established having recently received the equivalent to non-profit status in Portugal. Sailors for the Sea Japan was our first affiliate, launched in 2011. We are all working together to engage, educate, inspire and activate the boating community towards healing the ocean.
