About Sailors for the Sea

Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana is the world’s leading ocean conservation organization that educates and activates the sailing and boating community toward restoring ocean health. Sailors for the Sea unites sailors and boaters to take a stand for our oceans and waterways. Since the organization’s start in 2004, Sailors for the Sea has worked toward building a community of ocean stewards by offering tools, education and inspiration so that sailors may become change agents and harness the power of their passion to heal the ocean. Sailors for the Sea is headquartered in Newport, Rhode Island.

Kids Environmental Lesson Plans
“KELP are excellent tools for sailing organizations. With these activities sailors are engaged, having fun and learning something about the environment. As sailors it is important that we recognize how valuable our natural resources are, and it’s tools like KELP that make this possible. Activities are easy to follow and teach, even for the least science-oriented sailor” – Jen Guimaraes, Associate Director, Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center

“The KELP lessons are a tremendous resource for our NESS educators. They align directly with our goals of using sailing and science to create ocean stewards through engaging hands-wet activities… and the lessons are simple and easy to use!” – Mary Ann Horrigan, Program Director, New England Science and Sailing Foundation

Clean Regattas
“Being a Clean Regatta has not only helped Nantucket water quality, but has educated us and helped us run a better event. We have seen many ancillary benefits from being a Clean Regatta, including increased sponsorship and donors, and cost savings at the Yacht Clubs.” – Diana Brown, Nantucket Community Sailing

“There were so many ‘best parts’ about being a Clean Regatta! We partnered with community organizations and businesses that would not normally be involved with the regatta or sailing in general. The entire process is straightforward and transparent. We are already talking about how to improve on next year’s event and will be thrilled to be a certified clean regatta.” – Marcia Ward, Green Team Organizer, Little Traverse Yacht Club, 2016

“Clean Regatta has given the Royal Honk Kong Yacht Club a structure and a checklist to ensure that whilst we are sailing we are also protecting our oceans.  Enrollment in the Clean Regattas [program] was the catalyst for the club to become plastic water bottle and plastic bag free on Ocean Day earlier this year.” – Marcy Trent Long, Sailing Manager, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, 2016
