Sustainable Sailing - Sailors for the Sea

Sustainable Sailing

Just after winning the Volvo Ocean Race, Ian Walker, skipper of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing shared some of his feeling on the importance of protecting the ocean. But don’t just take our word for it watch the video below.

To follow along with Ian’s theme of sailors protecting the water they love, we are proud to say that as summer gets underway here in North America the Clean Regattas season is getting busy with 13 events just this month. We are very excited that participants cover a broad range of sailing events from the brand new SECOR Volvo Race with junior sailors traversing Fishers Island Sound to the storied Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac in its 107th year (and first year as a Clean Regatta!)

Other July events include:

  • Marblehead Junior Race Week, Marblehead, MA
  • Hyannis Yacht Club Regatta 2015, Hyannis, MA
  • H Class Championship, Marion, MA
  • 2015 Sail Park City Regatta, Bridgeport, CT
  • Mudhead Benefit Regatta, West Mystic, CT
  • Tim Allen Regatta, San Francisco, CA
  • Centrals On Sodus Annual Regatta, Sodus Point, NY
  • Junior Bay Week, Put-in-Bay, OH
  • International Moth Irish Open 2015, Howth, Ireland
  • Squib Nationals, Howth, Ireland
  • Vineyard Cup, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Additionally sailing clubs that are running their entire season of sailing as Clean Regattas, that will be very busy in July include:

  • Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center, Burlington, VT
  • Lake Minnetonka Sailing School, Deephaven, MN
  • Kurofune Yacht Club, Yokohama City, Japan
  • The WaterFront Center, Oyster Bay, NY
  • 2015 HMYC Club Race, Yokohama-shi, Japan
  • Kansai Yacht Club Point Race 2015, Nishinomiya, Hyogo Japan
  • Championnat Régional de Yachting de Québec, Quebec City, Canada

We have also received some great reports from Clean Regattas held already this year. Highlights include:

  • 1,921 pounds of glass, aluminum and plastic recycled at Antigua Sailing Week with 81% of sailors participating in the recycling program.
  • 1,500 water bottles distributed and 30 gallons of water (equivalent to 230 single use bottles) used at Block Island Race Week.
  • 60% of waste from the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover was either composted or recycled, a 31.5% improvement from the last major sailing event held there.
  • The Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Lisbon eliminated 85% of single-use dinnerware and silverware!
  • Charleston Race Week use electric golf carts for transporting competitors from the outer parking areas to the event venue instead of gas-powered ones
