Bluefin Tuna Bycatch

However, bycatch kills more than 80 other species, including endangered sea turtles, sharks, sailfish and other kinds of tuna. This uncontrolled mortality is particularly concerning in the Gulf of Mexico, the only known spawning ground for western Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Some good news: NOAA Fisheries has proposed new regulations that are largely aimed at reducing unwanted mortality of bluefin on longlines.  These regulations are open to a public comment period open until December 10.
