Based in Yokohama, Sailors for the Sea Japan, published the first sustainable seafood guide for the country in 2013 with support from the David and Lucille Packard Foundation. It is promoted through an annual Blue Seafood Festival, a Blue Seafood restaurant certification program, and with support from celebrities and government agencies. In addition to this groundbreaking guide Sailors for the Sea Japan operates an extensive children’s marine education using our KELP modules and through original lesson plans developed by the country’s leading ocean research institutions. There is also an active Clean Regattas program throughout Japan. Sailors for the Sea Japan is led by President Minako Iue.
Launched in Cascais, Portugal in June 2014, Sailors for the Sea Portugal was founded by a group of sailors who were part of the local organizing committee for the 2011 America’s Cup World Series in Cascais. At this event, they helped implement the Clean Regattas Program earning a Bronze Level Clean Regattas Certification. Based next to the Club Naval de Cascais located in the Marina de Cascais and run by an army of volunteers, this Affiliate published a leading children’s book about the ocean that has become required reading as part of the Portuguese Education agency’s national reading program. The KELP program is very popular and is currently being used in 1,000 schools around the country. With great winds and an historic legacy to the sea the Clean Regattas program is also very popular. Sailors for the Sea Portugal is led by President Bernardo de Correa de Barros.
