Maya Hoffman - Sailors for the Sea

Maya Hoffman

Maya Hoffman grew up sailing in a National Marine Sanctuary in Monterey, CA, which sparked a lifelong passion and love for the marine environment. She is a member of the Whale Entanglement Team and has assisted in the disentanglement of many humpbacks. Maya is a national level inshore racer in the Shields class and Santa Cruz 27 class, and an offshore racer. Maya has skippered and navigated various offshore races including Annapolis to Newport, Newport Bermuda, and Marblehead Halifax Ocean Race, among others. She served as onboard coach in the 2022 Newport Bermuda race for Team Bitter End, the youngest all-female crew to complete the race, and founded the all-female offshore race team Leading the Change! She received her Master’s degree in International Environmental Policy with a specialization in Ocean and Coastal Resource Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. She currently works as the Manager of Operations at an organization focused on building community-led environmental conservation and sustainable development, centering relationships with Indigenous communities and conservation groups.
