Skippers Corner: Green Boater Contest

Boston Yacht Club Commodore Tom Mager accepts a Green Boater burgee from Sailors for the Sea Skipper Rob Howie.

Sailors for the Sea and Sustainable Marblehead have announced the Boston Yacht Club as the winner of the inaugural Green Boater Contest 2022. The contest was created by Sailors for the Sea Skipper Rob Howie as a friendly way to encourage the six Marblehead, Massachusetts, area yacht clubs to sign up the greatest number of Green Boaters among their members.

“More than 90 local sailors and boaters have taken the Green Boater pledge,” says Rob Howie, who is looking forward to hosting the contest again in 2023. “With 2,800 boats in Marblehead waters, that means just 3 percent are Green Boaters, so we have room to grow.”

The Green Boater program is made up of individuals who pledge to avoid single use plastic and to be good stewards of our marine environment. When signing up, Green Boaters receive the Sailors for the Sea Green Boating Guide, which provides tips and best practices for eco-smart boating. It costs nothing to make the pledge; it’s about making a commitment to being a good steward of our oceans.

Interested in doing something similar with clubs, marinas or other organizations in your area? “Leverage the inherent competition among clubs in a harbor or marina,” suggests Howie. “It makes it fun and taps into the competitive nature of sailing.”
